Circle Hooks or J-Hooks?

I am still very new to the idea of circle hooks. I have used them for barbel fishing and they work very well. I am going to St Lucia Lake soon and want to try the circle hooks for salmon.

Fishing From A SUP: My Top 5 Reasons To Try It

1. SUP’s are lighter and easy to transport than a kayak or a fishingski.

Even though I carry my fishing ski by myself I still use a little trolly system. With the fishing sup I can carry it no problem by myself so loading and off loading it from the car is no issue.

2. Fly fisherman can cast in the traditional way, while fishing from a SUP.

Think of a sup as an island that you can move around. Also you don’t have to worry about what trees are on your back cast. I do a lot of bass fishing and a lot of the time I am casting from the deep water back to the structure. So I don’t have to worry about getting hooked up on trees behind me

3. Sight fishing from a SUP is awesome.

I have snuck up on so many fish. With the sup you need to keep your eyes open for any kinds of movement in the water and ripples on the surface. There is this island at golden harvest dam and it has a lot of fallen trees around it. There where huge carp just hiding in the fallen trees. I was fishing for bass so did not have the correct tackle with me but that would have been a awesome fishing experience.

4. You can bring along a cooler box when fishing from a SUP.

Sometimes you need to sit down after a long stand up fishing session. With a sup you can strap down a cooler box with your food and drinks in it. So when you need that rest you can do it in style.

5. Fishing SUPs are a very stable platform to fish from.

I have had all my 3 kids on my sup but what I often do is just take Cuba with me. He does his own thing on the SUP and we have never had a problem.

6. Here is a bonus reason. SUP fishing is great exercise.

I see people do yoga from there SUPs. I must say I have not taken it that far yet. But I can feel that after a fishing session on the sup I feel great and it was worked my body. Never mind that I am out in nature.

Fishing from a sup is lots of fun. Do not hesitate to contact me if you would like a demo session on a fishing sup.

Grunter on fly from Supfisher

Ian from the Fishing Sup fame has done us a quick video of him catching a Grunter on Fly. He tells me he is going to do a full story on the process on how to catch grunter on fly. I am super excited for that. In the meantime check out his video.

March long weekend

Hi All Addicts,

How often does it happen that in a group of fly fishing addicts, that the group splits up into smaller groups and goes off in a variety of directions on the same weekend and to catch totally different species of fish. Well, that’s exactly what happened over the long weekend 21st to 23rd of March 2014.

Justin Annells, Shane Tofte, Daniel Salter and Kevin went to Sterkfontein and tamed a few yellows.

Bryon Machado and friends went to the Mtenetu River on the Transkei coast for some fishing and some bundu bashing.

Craig Gartrell, Mike Wafer and families went to Glenrock in the midlands in search of trout.

Chris Rothman and family went after Black Bass in the Eston area .

Fishing at Gonubie East London

Recently I went on holiday to Gonubie East London. The place looked very awesome when we arrived. There is a very protected bay with little to no waves by the rocks on the right had side. To the left of the bay is a river mouth that runs along some rocks. Further up river within walking distance you get some cliffs going straight into the water. It was picture perfect as a fishing spot. You get the normal sand bars in the river and the deep gullies. With the sand bars being exposed at low tide.

I did a few sessions of drop shot fishing in the mouth and a little up the river. Very near the mouth something took a bite out my drop shot. My mates think it might have been a puffer fish. They say they had the same problem and ended up catching one and seeing the teeth configuration. I also threw poppers and spoons from the rocks into the bay, it looked like straight into the open sea. I did have a small chase on a popper but did not get to see what it was.

When we got there the red tide was around so I suspect that messed up the fishing a lot. I did pop in at the local tackle shop and chatted about the fishing and she told it had died after Feb. I still bought some drop shot paddle tails. A few days later I spoke to my cousin from East London and got some advice on how to fish the drop shots. I did try this and still had no luck. I get the feeling the fish where not around.

I also had a rubber duck type boat with an electric motor. So we plied the whole family in and headed up river. I did some trolling and casting while we where on the move. I saw a tailing grunter but was in the middle of getting my tackle ready so did not have a go at it. No luck with the fish but it was a fun outing with the family. Very cool to be chilling out on the water. The motor did catch my kids, they where expecting it to make a big noise.

So all in all it was not a fishing trip 🙁 better luck next time.

Bass fishing on a sup (stand up paddle board)

Cuba and I managed to go bass fishing the other day. I had done some research on some bass dams in the midrand area that I wanted to check out. Research means looking on google earth marking the dams and seeing how to get there. The mission was to go Bass fishing on my sup.

So the day came and I loaded the fishing sup on the car and all the tackle. We had water and food. I had also made a cool thing to attach my camera on to get some footage from a little further away. I had my head strap also. I did manage to get some interesting footage that I need to edit and upload to youtube.

I found a dam and it looked very promising. The other dam was in the midstream estate and the guys on sealine forum said it was very cool. It was when I checked it out but I could not use my fishing sup. So we just walked around and Cuba ran around on the golf course for a bit. The first dam was on private property and the security guard would not let us in. I will be going back to the Midstream dam without all the equipment and just a fly rod.

So in the end I decide to go the the dam below Stoke City. I went my normal route only to find that the road below the dam wall had been washed away and it was impassable. So again I felt like we where being blocked to go Bass fishing on my sup. I decide that I will find the other way round to get to the dam. Nothing like an adventure and I found the other road to get to the dam. So I got the fishing sup offloaded and all the goodies attached. Cuba and I fished the dam from one end to the other but not a single bite. I am blaming the heavy rain for doing something to the bass. So it is back to google earth and l am going to find some new dams to go Bass fishing on a sup.

Fishing rod sleeves for tangle free fishing rods

Fishing rod sleevesI did do a post about rod socks and I was very excited about them so I decided to make my own fishing rod sleeves. I went on a mission to the material shop and after looking around I found some rip stop material. It is the same stuff they use to make dry macs, kites and a few other things I am sure. The rip stop does come in a few colours and next time I am going to get all the colours. The material is very smooth so the fishing rods slide into the sleeves fast and easy. My first few where not that well sewn but after some direction from my wife I have made them awesome and I have a little extra I want to add to the next batch. I recently took them for a test drive. My son and I went bass fishing and the rods where in the back of the car. Normally what happens when the rods are all bunched up they will get tangled with each other. The line will twist around an eye plus you can’t see which way it is twisted and it is just frustrating to untangle a simple mess. With the rod sleeves I had no such issue, the rods when into the car and came out the car untangled. It was great and I am in love. My next mission will be to test them in my fishingski hatch. That one is normally a very scary mess.

I have made them for 6’6” and 7’ fishing rods. If this is something you would be interested in let me know lantz@fishingencounters.co.za or post in the comments below. I am also doing some market research and am very interested to know how much you would be willing to pay for fishing rod sleeves.

If you want to win 3 fishing rod sleeves, either for 6’6” or 7’ fishing rods or a combo. Just subscribe to my blog (top right area) I will then do a random draw on the 28th of Feb 2014 and contact you for your shipping address.
